APS board mulls changes to graduation requirements

AURORA | The Aurora Public Schools District Board of Education heard feedback from teachers, parents and district staff regarding proposed changes to graduation requirements during its meeting Dec. 14.

The feedback session, led by APS Chief Academic Officer William Stuart, focused specifically on plans to change the district’s graduation requirements to align more closely with admission requirements from the Colorado Department of Higher Education. The group also discussed changing requirements in the district to allow students more flexibility and freedom in choosing their own elective classes.
“I’m really excited about giving the students choice in their electives,” said Jinger Haberer, principal at Hinkley High School. “We believe that if we were to make that change, it would allow our electives to be more student-driven.”
Stuart stressed that the proposed standards would require the same amount of credits for Aurora Public School students to graduate high school.
The dialogue with teachers, along with feedback from parents, students and other groups, is part of the district’s wider push to garner input regarding future goals. The input could eventually be incorporated in the district’s VISTA 2015 plan, a blueprint that will guide nearly every element of the district’s operations for the next five years.
The last regular meeting of the APS board for the year also saw the approval of mill levy rates initially approved by voters in 2008, as well as the school calendar for the 2010-11 year. The board also approved an amended budget as part of its consent agenda, a document that includes new appropriations for the district’s general operating fund.
The next board meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Jan. 4, 2011 at the Dr. Edward and Mrs. Patricia Lord Boardroom at the district’s Educational Services Center, 1085 Peoria St.
